THE TRUST

Barton Court Academy Trust (BCAT) is a multi-academy Trust which was established in 2017.

It currently consists of three secondary schools: Barton Court Grammar School, an 11-18 years, mixed selective school in the heart of Canterbury, rated “Good” with many outstanding features by Ofsted in February 2020 and November 2024; The Charles Dickens School, an 11-16 years mixed non-selective school in Broadstairs, rated “Good” by Ofsted in March 2023 and Barton Manor Free School, an 11–18 years non-selective mixed school in the heart of Canterbury which opened to Year 7 in September 2022 and as the school grows now has Y7, 8 and 9 from September 2024.

The Charles Dickens School

The Charles Dickens School is a successful, over-subscribed, non-selective 11-16 school located in Broadstairs, Kent. We have a vision and a determination to provide our community with an excellent school and we are making great progress towards this. Since 2022 we have been the highest performing non-selective school in the district and since 2023 we have been the highest performing non-selective school in East Kent. Schools Week identified us as the 8^th most improved school in the country between 2019 and 2023, for schools with an above average proportion of Pupil Premium pupils. Our Progress 8 score in 2024 was +0.22. We are heavily over-subscribed and have an excellent reputation for our culture of high expectation. Our recent Ofsted Inspection in March 2023 graded the School “Good” in every category.

Barton Court Grammar School

Barton Court Grammar School (BCGS) is a state, selective, co-educational school with a strong reputation for its high academic standards and its caring and supportive ethos. In February 2020 and November 2024 Ofsted judged the school to be ‘good’ and it possessed many ‘outstanding’ features. The School is an accredited ‘Advanced Thinking School’ and is also the lead school of Barton Court Academy Trust (BCAT). 

The School is committed to excellence in professional development and an extensive well-being programme is in place with many benefits including reduced gym membership at CCCU, event afternoons throughout the year and other benefits offered by BCAT and Kent Rewards.

Barton Manor School

Barton Manor School, is a non-selective 11-18 school located in Canterbury, a 5 minute walk from Barton Court Grammar School. The School is in its third year of opening, with students in Y7, Y8 and Y9 only, and when full it will have a shared Sixth Form provision with Barton Court Grammar School providing a wide-range of vocational and academic courses. We have a vision and a determination to provide our community with an excellent school and we are making great strides towards this. To work here is to embrace the challenges of an economically-diverse community and understand the influence education has in addressing social immobility.  We’re looking for brilliant people to join us on our exciting journey with opportunities for staff to work and teach at both Barton Court and Barton Manor.

The Post

Required for  1 August or sooner, the Trustees are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, experienced Governance Professional to be responsible for overseeing all aspects of governance effectiveness and compliance within the trust, ensuring governance adheres to good practice and meets all statutory and regulatory requirements.

You will be required to support the efficient and effective operation of the trust board and its committees; ensuring governance at all levels is carrying out its functions; supporting the clerks of the Local Governing Board as required; leading on development of the trust’s governance framework and driving improvements to its systems, processes and structures and managing and coordinating the delivery and ongoing improvement of governance support across the trust.

Depending on experience and qualifications the role attracts a pay range between BCAT 7 - BCAT 9. (BCAT 7: Level 3 Clerking, BCAT 8: Level 4 Academy Governance, BCAT 9: Chartered Governance). We support further training and career development with this specific role and candidates interested in completing relevant qualifications and training.

The ability to work evenings to clerk committee meetings which usually run between 5 – 8pm, some of which will be face-to-face in Canterbury and some on-line are essential as is the ability to work flexible hours as the job role requires.

The job role would suit someone who wishes to work flexibly with a zero hours contract or someone who wishes to become an employee. The hours of work are expected to be equivalent to 4 days per week, 0.8FTE.
